FAQ

Who is Lien Aid?

Lien Aid is a Singapore based non-governmental organisation that seeks to build a firm foundation for human development by making safe water and sanitation accessible and affordable to poor communities in Asia.

Lien Aid was set up in 2006 through the Lien Foundation - Nanyang Technological University Environmental Endeavour to address the water and sanitation crisis in developing countries around Asia. Lien Aid’s strength lies in delivering solutions using appropriate technology backed by knowledge transfer. Since its inception, Lien Aid has impacted thousands of lives through various water treatment, sanitation and community development initiatives.

Where does Lien Aid work?

Lien Aid is currently concentrating its efforts on Asia’s impoverished communities where the water and sanitation crisis is most acute. We have on-going programmes in 3 countries where Lien Aid has a country office: Cambodia, Vietnam and China. In the past, we also completed a few projects in Indonesia, Thailand and Myanmar. As the issues we deal with are dynamic, we are constantly assessing the needs of the people and exploring ways in which simple technologies can be implemented efficiently and cost-effectively in those communities.

Our work is based on the principles of integrating available solutions, adapting to local conditions and partnering with players from various sectors to roll out comprehensive programs. Please visit our website regularly to see our updated project locations.

Why is Lien Aid focused on water and sanitation?

Access to safe water and sanitation is a pressing issue for many poor communities. Poverty has many reasons, but we believe that at the very core of it is the issue of human development. Education and enterprise, the engines of economic development, will mean nothing if it is not built on the backs of healthy individuals and healthy communities. Focusing on water and sanitation is therefore a high leverage form of intervention that allows us to achieve great impact with limited resources.

How does Lien Aid select its projects?

We work very closely with local communities, governments and NGOs to assess the needs of each area against our resources and expertise. Our preference is for projects which build capacity, encourage participation by the beneficiaries themselves, and result in long-term solutions for the targeted community.

I’m concerned about water and sanitation issues. How can I get involved?

Whenever we require volunteer consultants on our projects, the area of volunteer expertise we are looking for will be updated on our website. Please go to Updates regularly to see how you can be part of the solution to improve the lives of impoverished communities in Asia.

How is Lien Aid governed?

Lien Aid is governed by a Board of Directors which is formed by a group of outstanding individuals in their various fields. The Board oversees, advises and charts the direction of Lien Aid.

Lien Aid was set up in 2006 through the Lien Foundation - Nanyang Technological University Environmental Endeavour. The Environmental Endeavour (or EE), established within the Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute (NEWRI), is a partnership between the Lien Foundation and Nanyang Technological University to advance the provision of clean water and sanitation for the benefit of communities in Asia not yet adequately empowered with sustainable solutions that improve health, alleviate economic stagnation, and mitigate environmental degradation.
