Lien Aid in Indonesia

Indonesia counts more than 100 million people lacking access to safe water. It is common practice for people to rely on rivers for drinking water, washing and even defecation / to defacate in. Water contamination is an urgent issue to tackle as the people are often unaware of the risks arising from it.

Unsafe water and poor sanitary conditions result in a large number of water-related diseases and in the death of more than 100,000 children. In rural areas, most are not connected to the municipality water pipelines and only 69% of the population has access to safe water, the sanitation coverage standing at a mere 38%. These numbers have remained largely unchanged over the past decade. For a real impact, investments in infrastructure have to be supported by education and advocacy.

Lien Aid was set up in 2006 through the Lien Foundation - Nanyang Technological University Environmental Endeavour. The Environmental Endeavour (or EE), established within the Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute (NEWRI), is a partnership between the Lien Foundation and Nanyang Technological University to advance the provision of clean water and sanitation for the benefit of communities in Asia not yet adequately empowered with sustainable solutions that improve health, alleviate economic stagnation, and mitigate environmental degradation.
